New hypersonics graduate certificate available

A new graduate certificate is moving at five times the speed of sound into the 񱦵.

񱦵 is now offering a graduate-level hypersonics certificate to both degree-seeking and non-degree seeking students.

The certificate will allow students to develop interdisciplinary skills in the field of hypersonics, including knowledge of gas dynamics, materials, controls, and how their inter-relationships determine hypersonic vehicle performance.

Iain Boyd, aerospace professor and hypersonics program coordinator said the certificate aims to fill a growing business and governmental need in Colorado and across the USA in hypersonics research for space exploration and national defense.

“Due to the sudden expansion of interest in hypersonics, there is a significant workforce shortfall in this area,” said Boyd. “The new Hypersonics Certificate will give graduate students a tremendously valuable opportunity to learn about unique aspects of hypersonic vehicles. Upon graduation, these students will be ready to hit the ground running and contribute immediately to commercial activities in this important field.”

Program enrollees must complete a required graduate-level introduction to hypersonics course and three elective courses chosen from a list of relevant classes in aerospace and mechanical engineering.

Created jointly by the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences and Paul M. Rady Department of Mechanical Engineering, the certificate was approved by the CU Board of Regents last month and is now open for enrollment.
