VRC Video GA Position

Job description

The VRC Video Graduate Assistant (VRCV GA) is an excellent fit for those studying video or film, although others with videography and video editing experience may be considered. Graduate Assistant appointments are typically assigned by the department as part of the admissions process for Art and Art History graduate students.

Duties

Under the supervision of the Visual Resources Specialist, the VRCV GA:

  • Maintains the VRC collection of videos and accompanying reference materials. The video collection includes lectures and interviews from the Visiting Artist Program, student work, and other materials in support of the curriculum.
  • Requests scheduling of Classroom Capture for Visiting Artist lectures, and communicates with OIT as needed about files.
  • Attends and assists with live Visiting Artist lectures (i.e., provides technical support to artist and facilitates Classroom Capture).
  • Prepares (e.g., transcodes), uploads, and catalogs streaming videos for the VRC database.
  • Creates video backups according to ensure long-term preservation and access.
  • Maintains records and documents video production activities and procedures for VRC records.
  • Assists with image acquisitions, particularly where it relates to the images depicting work by visiting artists.
  • Assists with general services in the VRC, including reference questions from patrons.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Position requirements

The position requires videography and video editing proficiency, as well as excellent research skills, attention to detail, initiative, and follow-through. A background in archives, libraries, or museums collections management is helpful.

Scheduling

Each semester, the appointment for the VRCV GA position begins the first day of classes, and ends the last day of finals week. With breaks during the semester excluded, the duration of the appointment each semester totals 16 weeks, with an obligation to work a set number of weekly hours over those 16 weeks.

The VRCV GA commits to attending all visiting artist lectures (on specified Tuesdays during the fall and spring semesters, 6:00pm-8:30pm), as well as a regular weekly schedule between 8:30am and 5:00pm, M-F.  In the event of hours missed due to illness or other reasons, the GA will make up the hours missed so as to reach the total number of hours scheduled for the given semester.
