Information for Potential Visiting Scholars at CAS
CAS has limited availability for Visiting Scholars during the 24-25 Academic Year. We encourage applications for summer 2025 and beyond.
The Center for Asian Studies welcomes self-funded visiting scholars from Asia for short-term residency-based research activities at the University of Colorado. The Center has limited office space and resources and is not always able to accommodate all applicants. CAS Visiting Scholars conduct research in collaboration with an Asian Studies faculty host, and CU serves as the visa sponsor.
Scholars interested in pursuing a visiting scholar appointment at CAS should:
- First, contact Lucy Lin (lucy.lin@colorado.edu) with exact desired dates of visiting scholar status at the University of Colorado to check the availability of visiting scholar positions at CAS. Note that visa processes can require a minimum of two-to-three months after step three (below) has been completed, so plan accordingly.
- Second, identify and contact a potential faculty host from the CAS affiliated faculty list (). Faculty hosts are expected to provide on-site support and introduce visiting scholars to appropriate campus contacts. Paperwork to be completed by faculty hosts includes the Request for DS-2019 and English language proficiency form, to be provided by CAS in step 4.
- Third, prepare a Project Description of no more than 2 pages indicating the project objectives, qualifications of the visiting scholar, timeline for completion of the project (including updated dates of residency at the University of Colorado), and indication of the resources at the University of Colorado needed to complete the project. Such resources may be library holdings, expertise of the Asian Studies faculty, or other resources otherwise unavailable at the visiting scholar’s home institution. The Project Description should be submitted to Lucy Lin (email above) along with a CV and a statement of financial resources.
- Fourth, upon receiving approval by CAS and the faculty host, pay a processing fee of $200 to CAS. CAS will provide information about necessary paperwork.
