After listening to the incredible song, I imagined a video about radical empathy and bodies swapping heads as a form of collective care. I shot some sketches in the ATLAS Studio Lab 2, an intimate green screen studio, and after teaching that day, stayed up all night, making some rough collages for the video. Sleater-Kinney dug it, and I had less than a month to flush out sketches and build a world.

Who did you work with?

I am infinitely lucky to call on the immense talent and phenomenal resources available to make films at the University of Colorado. I immediately turned to former CINE graduate student and current adjunct Laura Conway (MFA 2021) to be the Producer and Director of Photography for this video. She brought former CINE BFA student Mariah Diaz on as Production Coordinator and COVID Safety Officer. Laura also suggested Madison Palffy, a graduate student in the Dance department, as a Movement Director for the project. I have had all these women as students in various courses, and it was energizing to work with them as peers on this project!

Laura and Madison reached out to members of the CU dance community and there was such an abundance of talent on the shoot, ranging from undergrads to faculty from the Dance department.

What was the shooting day like?

We held a one-day, 10-hour shoot in the ATLAS Studio Lab 1, a state-of-the-art broadcast studio with an impressive green screen built by Bret Mann from the ATLAS Institute. I immediately moved to San Francisco a month after graduation and worked as a photographer for two years. I used photography to get down to LA where I switched gears and worked as a content producer for an Entertainment News Company. Working in Entertainment News was truly a film nerd's DREAM, I was so thankful to land that job. 2 years into that gig I ended up pitching a short script Asking for a Friend to a friend who had recently launched a production company and she picked it up. That project launched my career as a writer/director and brought me to where I am today. (You can watch it on Alter).

What projects are you working on right now?

I'm currently in the festival circuit with a film I wrote and directed called The Fourth Wall starring Lizzie Brocheré (American Horror Story: Asylum). I'm also in pre-pro on another feature set to be filming next year in spring.

What projects do you see in your future?

Possibilities are endless! Along with the 4 projects I have percolating in the world right now - I think I will dabble in TV at some point. TV is getting more and more cinematic each day which is so exciting to me.

How do you feel your CINE education has influenced your career path and/or how you approach your work?

Man, the film program at CU forced me out of my box in so many ways. The program was very experimental focused which turned my view of film completely upside down. I'll never forget staying up all night scratching stories into super 8 film and taking deep dives into all things Stan Brakhage. These things shaped so much of my aesthetic and continue to make guest appearances in my films today.

I lean more towards narrative stories but due to that experimental background, my work has become more textured with an art-house flare.

Did you have a favorite class or instructor while you were a student?

I have 3 for different reasons. I'm a genre filmmaker so naturally, when I saw a horror film class offered at CU I jumped for joy. Janet Robinson taught an American History and Horror Films class that absolutely shifted my taste in horror films and forced me to grow in so many ways. I started looking at the genre as more of a political tool instead of a gateway to cheap thrills.

I was also fortunate enough to take Alex Cox's screenwriting class which completely opened my eyes to my own weirdness. Alex was a huge supporter of the odd and unusual and he always encouraged me to lean into the absurdity that was present in most of my scripts at that time. I really appreciated that, and it allowed me to have more confidence in the stories I wanted to tell.

Phil Solomon was my senior thesis film professor, and the man taught the shit out of that class. He was absolutely a master filmmaker and he understood how to foster young talent. I wish he was still around today so I could tell him how much his class meant to me.

What advice would you offer a current CINE student who is interested in a similar path to yours?

You will hear so many negative things throughout your journey to becoming a filmmaker and even when you're deep in your career.

You should know two things:
1) People always poo-poo things they feel they can't have. Don't listen to anyone who says you can't or shouldn't do something.
2) It will always be difficult to fully explain your vision, and many times people won't get it. Don't let a misinterpretation of what you're trying to execute scare you away from making the film you want to make. Trust your gut.

Any other comments or words of wisdom?

Lean into your weirdness - it's going to make you great.

    Kelsey's Website

    Kelsey on IMDb

    Watch THE FOURTH WALL

Off

Traditional

0

On

White
Mon, 21 Dec 2020 22:49:51 +0000 Anonymous 783 at /cinemastudies Laura Conway (MFA '20) to Have Film Premiere at Slamdance /cinemastudies/2020/12/07/laura-conway-mfa-20-have-film-premiere-slamdance Laura Conway (MFA '20) to Have Film Premiere at Slamdance Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 12/07/2020 - 16:09

Tags:

Alumni Events

Laura Conway (MFA, 2020)

Laura Conway's film The Length of Day, which was funded in part by a Grillo Award, will have its world premier at the 2021 Slamdance film festival.

Tickets to the festival are free until December 31st!

    Get Tickets Here

The Length of Day is a collaged essay film that tells an emotional history of socialism in the United States. After that I hope to continue to work my way up in the camera department to an AC and eventually a camera operator. Now that I've gotten my day job established in the film industry, I hope to circle back to making smaller, independent features in between studio shows so I can hone in on my operating skills.

How do you feel your CINE education has influenced your career path and/or how you approach your work?

My time in the Film Studies program directly led to my first experience on a major set working as the DoP for Alex's Cox's film Tombstone-Rashomon after my graduation. My years spent in Boulder learning about experimental filmmakers, shooting 16mm film on a Bolex, and developing Super8 film in the caverns of the Macky basement have shaped my aesthetic and put me a step ahead when there are film opportunities, where I have loaded 35mm film for several jobs. All of the film theory and critical analysis that I absorbed while at CU perfectly supplement what I do for a living where that kind of thinking isn't always apparent. I work with a crew of 150 people, and we all perform very specialized individual tasks. So it's nice to remind myself what kind of storytelling and visual elements are happening in the frame that we're all working so hard to create. Plus it never hurts to whip out some classic film school nerd knowledge from having watched Battleship Potemkin or Persona.

Did you have a favorite class/instructor while you were a student?

Kelly Sears' animation class was one of my favorites. I really felt like I was learning something for the first time, and each day I was able to immerse myself and spend hours creating frame by frame animations which awakened an interest I didn't know I had. Learning to shoot on a Bolex in Victor Jendras' class was also a pinnacle moment in my time at CU. Seeing my first developed roll of 50D was a truly magical experience. The films that he shared during that class, as well as the thorough feedback to our own films really challenged me to think in new and creative ways. Lastly, alternative processes with Andy Busti opened a skill set I don't think I would have otherwise gained in my lifetime. Learning to process film, and apply different techniques to the mix, further garnered my appreciation for things done tactically, and without computer effects or filters. Overall the instructors and the experience in class were what made the program so memorable. I wish there was a master list of all the films and filmmakers we explored, because that exposure broadened my perspective as a filmmaker.

What advice would you offer a current CINE student who is interested in a similar path to yours?

MAKE AS MUCH CONTENT AS YOU CAN WHILE YOU'RE IN SCHOOL. Take every production class and complete every assignment knowing that the finished video will be a part of your reel. Make stuff for fun too while you have access to talented friends and equipment.

Any other comments or words of wisdom?

If you want to be a writer, start writing. If you want to be a director, start directing. There is no clear path for any of these professions, but as long as you live your truth and put the effort in, things tend to work out. It is a privilege to be in a university and there is so much available to you right now that you won't have after you leave. Leave with a portfolio or a reel, because in the film industry no one cares about your degree. But it is super valuable to learn how to complete projects, work with other creatives, and challenge yourself creatively. Don't do it for the degree. Do it for the experience.

    Alana on IMDb

Alana Murphy (BFA, 2015) tells us a little about where she's been since graduating and what life is like working in the camera department on major productions.

Off

Traditional

0

On

White
Wed, 02 Dec 2020 00:55:53 +0000 Anonymous 751 at /cinemastudies Q&A Session with Sean Bailey /cinemastudies/2020/11/16/qa-session-sean-bailey Q&A Session with Sean Bailey Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 11/16/2020 - 09:24

Tags:

Alumni Events

On November 13th, 2020, President of Production at Walt Disney Studios, Sean Bailey, held a live Q&A session with the University of Colorado.
