Building a better ā€˜bionic pancreasā€™

Living with Type 1 diabetes is demandingā€”patients must stay on top of their diet and exercise, even if theyā€™re living with technology like insulin pumps or continuous glucose monitors. But information science faculty Casey Fiesler and Steven Voida are optimistic that with the help of holistic technology, this will change. Theyā€™ve received a grant from the National Institutes of Health, and, along with other university colleagues, hope to develop a ā€œperson-centered artificial pancreas.ā€

Hereā€™s to the next 100 years

This year, weā€™re celebrating the centennial of the Department of Journalism, established April 21,1922, by the Board of Regents. As we have explored archival documents dating to the 1920s, itā€™s been fun to go through photos and see the changes in technology (and fashion!) over the past 100 years.

Designing Tech with Mortality in Mind

Itā€™s inevitable that at some point we must all ā€œget our affairs in order,ā€ and when we do, there are checklists, policies and professionals to help create everything from wills and trusts to advance directives. But a key elementā€”guidance surrounding technology and end-of-life planningā€”is missing. Assistant Professor Jed Brubaker will work to close this gap through a five-year research project supported by a prestigious NSF CAREER grant.

Guiding Lights

In the summer of 2017, Joel Holton was one of nearly 600 personnel fighting the Keystone Fire, from which he narrowly escaped. A few years laterā€“ā€“as a senior studying information scienceā€“ā€“he teamed up with classmates to develop new navigation aids with the needs of wildland firefighters in mind.
