Aiu Dismissed After 12 Seasons as Coach

Six weeks after ending a season in which the volleyball team lost seven of its final eight matches, athletic director Mike Bohn fired head coach Pi’i Aiu (DistSt ex’89) on Jan. 12. Aiu served a dozen seasons as head coach and was the winningest coach in program history (199-154) but went 13-16 (7-13 in the Big 12) in 2008. The Buffs missed the NCAA tournament for the second straight year and just the third time in the last 18 seasons, although they did deal national semifinalist Nebraska one of its three losses in 2008. Aiu had been with the program in some capacity since its debut in 1986.

Bohn lauded Aiu’s service at CU but said, “After reviewing this season and the overall state of the volleyball program, we recognize that it’s time for a new direction and it is best for Pi’i to step down at this time.”
