Women’s Golf Swings onto National Scene
The CU women’s golf program earned two team victories in a season for the first time, claiming titles in the Buffs’ Heather Farr Memorial Invitational in October and at a Colorado State-hosted tournament. The Heather Farr victory, which also included an individual win by Pepperdine transfer Jessica Wallace, was particularly emotional as it came less than 24 hours after five CU players (including Wallace) were involved in a three-car accident.
“We showed a lot of heart and played for each other,” coach Anne Kelly says. “It’s like a movie plot. In all my years of golf, this is one of the gutsiest performances I’ve ever seen.”
The team’s strong start to the season — it finished in the top three in all four of its tournaments through the end of October — vaulted the Buffs into the top 25 in the national rankings.
䱫’s&Բ;Emily Talley was named Big 12 Women’s Golfer of the Month for September. In the first two months of the season, the junior recorded four straight top-10 individual finishes, which extended her program record to five.
As for the CU men, they finished seventh in the inaugural Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, named in honor of Buffs longtime men’s coach Mark Simpson (Rec’83), who died five years ago after battling cancer.
