Sanchez Takes Soccer Reins

After having just two head coaches in the 16 seasons of the women’s soccer program, CU hired Danny Sanchez, who led Denver’s Metro State to two Division II national titles and has spent the last four years at Wyoming.

Sanchez succeeds Bill Hempen who guided the Buffs to six NCAA tournament appearances but went 4-13-2 in 2011 before resigning.

In a 17-year coaching career, Sanchez’s teams at Wyoming, Metro State and Mesa (Ariz.) Community College have gone a combined 267-60-23. Wyoming went 12-6-4 in 2011 — the best record in school history — and defeated CU 1-0 in Boulder.

Missed some of the season?

Cross country coach Mark Wetmore was named 2011 Pac-12 men’s coach of the year.

Football player Rodney Stewart finished his Buff career with 4,828 all-purpose yards, the most in program history.

Cyclist Joey Schusler claimed his fourth consecutive national downhill title in the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships in Angel Fire, N.M.

CU senior football player Brian Lockridge was one of 22 players nationwide to be named to the Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team for his charitable work in the community.
The defending national champion men’s soccer club team suffered only one loss in its season — 2-0 to Cal-Berkeley — but it lost in the round of 16 at the NCCS National Soccer Championships in Phoenix. Gunnar Ashton, left, is a junior and president of the CU men’s soccer team.
