Chip, CU’s buffalo character mascot, has appeared at games and university events since the 1980s. He dances, jokes and even brings along his family members to join the fun. Here are 10 fun facts about Chip the Buffalo, the life of every CU campus party.

Chip can be found at CU football, basketball and volleyball games, as well as at other community, campus and charity events.
To ensure that everyone who plays Chip performs similarly, the students attend a camp over the summer to train. While there, they do drills to practice walking, taking big steps and turning their heads.
Chip is a part of the University of Colorado Spirit Program, which also includes the dance team and cheer team.
In a normal year, Chip makes anywhere from 300 to 400 appearances.
All of the students who perform as Chip must maintain anonymity to protect the character.
Six to eight students per year split the duties as Chip.
The head of the Chip costume is a hockey helmet with foam and steel added to create Chip’s likeness. It weighs somewhere between 7 and 8 pounds.
Chip once conducted an orchestra at Macky Auditorium.
Children who join the Chip Kid’s Club can get a special personalized note on their birthdays from the mascot himself.
Chip has won three first-place Universal Cheerleaders Association National Championships. He took home back-to-back wins in 2009 and 2010, and he most recently won in 2020.

On March 20 at 10:15 a.m., the Buffs will begin their descent into madness. March Madness, that is.

This year, the CU men’s basketball team will play Georgetown in the East Region’s first-round game of the NCAA tournament, also known as March Madness. The team, coached by Tad Boyle, was named a No. 5 seed and will play No. 12 seed Georgetown in the first round of the tournament.

This year, Colorado’s seed is the highest it’s been since the NCAA started seeding the entire field in 1979. The Buffs have never won the tournament, but they have gained entry 15 times, including in 2021. As you cheer on the Buffs to what will hopefully be their best performance in March Madness yet, here’s a look at 10 years the CU men’s basketball team made it to the NCAA tournament.

1940

1940 was the first year the CU men’s basketball team was invited to play in the NCAA tournament. CU, coached by Frosty Cox, was the regular season champion of the Mountain State Athletic Conference. USC toppled the Buffs with a score of 38-32 in the Western semifinal, and CU lost to Rice in the West Region’s third-place game.

1942

Two years after the Buffs’ first time playing in the NCAA tournament, they returned, still under the leadership of coach Frosty Cox. This time, the team was more successful, making it to the national semifinal. Although this was only an eight-team tournament, it is boasted as the first time CU made it to the Final Four. The Buffs were knocked out by Stanford with a score of 46-34.

1955

In 1955, CU had its first 19-win season, culminating in a bid for the NCAA tournament. The team opened with a 69-59 win over Tulsa, then beat Bradley to move on to the national semifinals. The Buffs played hard but lost to San Francisco by a score of 62-50.

1962

After winning 14 of their final 15 regular season games, the Buffs knocked out Texas Tech in the Midwest Region semifinals. CU then faced off with Cincinnati in the elite eight but lost by a score of 73-46.

1963

Coached by Sox Walseth, the Buffs of 1963 toppled Oklahoma City in the Midwest Region semifinals. They then followed a path similar to the year before, losing to Cincinnati in the national semifinals with a score of 67-60.

1969

In 1969, CU returned to the top-25 ranked teams with a 21-win season. The Buffs faced off with their iconic rival, Colorado State, in the Sweet 16 but suffered a crushing loss with a score of 64-56.

1997

After 28 years without receiving a bid for the tournament, the Buffs rebounded with a bid in 1997. Led by Colorado native Chauncy Billups, who was tapped for the NBA after the tournament, the team toppled Indiana in the first round with a score of 80-62. The Buffs headed home in the next round after a loss to North Carolina.

2012

In CU’s first year in the PAC-12 and Tad Boyle’s second year as coach, CU stunned its opponents by winning the conference tournament. After winning four games in four days, CU entered the NCAA tournament with a second-round win over the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Their winning streak came to an end in the third round, when Baylor knocked out CU with a score of 80-63.

2014

After making the tournament in 2012 and 2013, the Buffs’ entry in 2014 marked CU’s first-ever third consecutive bid to the NCAA tournament. This stint in the tournament was short-lived, as CU lost to Pittsburgh in their first game.

2016

In 2016, CU’s most recent year of entry into the NCAA tournament before 2021, the Buffs were named a No. 8 seed. The Buffs were knocked out in the first round when they lost to UConn with a score of 74-67.

You might know them by name or email, or maybe they’ve taught you in class. Our leaders at CU often do it all, from running programs and departments, inspiring students both in and out of the classroom and even finding time for some unexpected hobbies on the side. Here are 10 fun facts about some of CU’s faculty and staff leaders.

1. Mark Kennedy, CU President

Fun Fact: From 2001–07, Kennedy served in the U.S. House of Representatives, first for Minnesota’s Second Congressional District and then for its Sixth Congressional District.

2. Phillip P. DiStefano, ��񱦵� Chancellor

Fun Fact: DiStefano was a first-generation college student, attending Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then went on to earn a master’s degree from West Virginia University before returning to Ohio State University to earn his Doctorate.

3. Akirah Bradley, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Fun Fact: Bradley has sailed as a staff member on three voyages of Semester at Sea, a study abroad program based out of a traveling cruise ship.

4. Russell L. Moore, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Fun Fact: Moore is an adjunct professor in cardiology at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus.

5. Sharon Matusik, Dean, Leeds School of Business

Fun Fact: Matusik was once a visiting professor at Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD) in Santiago, Chile.

6. John Davis, Dean, College of Music

Fun Fact: While serving as assistant director of jazz studies at the University of Northern Colorado, Davis was also the festival coordinator for the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival for six years, the nation’s largest event of its kind.

7. Lori Bergen, Dean, College of Media, Communication and Information

Fun Fact: Bergen is a former Miss Kansas and semi-finalist in the Miss America Pageant. She won a preliminary talent award for the classic fiddle tune “Orange Blossom Special.”

8. Kathy Schultz, Dean, School of Education

Fun Fact: Before her deanship at Mills College, Shultz climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with her family.

9. Keith Molenaar, Interim Dean, College of Engineering and Applied Science

Fun Fact: Molenaar worked on the Panama Canal expansion project, which took place between 2009 and 2016.

10. Robert McDonald, Dean, University Libraries, Senior Vice Provost of Online Education

Fun Fact: While studying for a master’s in music at the University of Georgia, McDonald sang in the Men’s Glee Club and the Concert Choir.

As a CU student, alum or supporter, you can take pride in the amazing discoveries and inventions that have been created by people in your community. CU is full of innovators, who have changed the world in ways both big and small. Here are 10 inventions and discoveries made by CU faculty and alumni.

1. Post-it Note Adhesive

You might use them to leave reminders or label your lunch. Maybe you’re a Post-it traditionalist who uses them for the originally intended purpose — to bookmark your pages. No matter what you stick them to, you can thank CU alum Spencer Silver (PhDA&S’66). While working as a senior chemist for 3M’s Central Research Labs in 1968, Silver developed the reusable adhesive that eventually became a main component of Post-it Notes, which launched in 1980.

2. Liquid Crystals

Researchers at ��񱦵�, led by physics professor Ivan Smalyukh, have designed new kinds of liquid crystals that mirror the complex internal structure of some solid crystals. The group’s findings, published in the journal Nature, could one day be used to create new, more energy efficient types of smart windows and television and computer displays.

3. 3D Printing

Late one night in 1983, CU alum Chuck Hull (EngrPhys’61) made a scientific breakthrough with his creation of a small plastic cup. Although seemingly unassuming, the cup was the first object to be created using stereolithography, better known as 3D printing. Hull’s discovery became the basis for the 3D printing that is a common practice across industries and homes today. After securing a patent for stereolithography in 1986, he founded his company, 3D Systems. Hull is now a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

4. Dry Fogger

In 1982, after freezing solid the set of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video for 20 hours, CU alum Jim Doyle (Thtr’78) thought there had the be a better way to create fog than with liquid nitrogen. Doyle got to work and created a fog machine, which quickly became the industry standard. By 1986, Doyle’s dry fogger was used on the opening night of Alice Cooper’s “Nightmare Returns” tour. Later, Doyle received a 1992 Academy Award for its use in Terminator 2.

5. Inhalable Measles Vaccine

In 2010, a team of researchers led by CU chemistry and biochemistry professor Robert Sievers developed an inhalable measles vaccine, which works when patients breathe in a puff of dry powder. One main goal of the inhalable inoculation is to mitigate needle use, as needles can be scary to some and can pose difficulties in disposal.

6. Lasers

In 1960, CU alum Theodore Maiman (EngrPhys’49) developed the laser with the help of his research assistant Charles Asawa. At the age of 32, Maiman had invented an essential technology that is now used across all aspects of life, ranging from manufacturing to surgery to grocery store checkout scanners. Maiman was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1984.

7. Bose-Einstein Condensate

In 1995, in a laboratory at JILA, a joint institute of ��񱦵� and NIST, ��񱦵� physics professor Carl E. Wieman and colleague Eric A. Cornell, a research physicist and NIST fellow, led the team that produced the first Bose-Einstein condensate, which is a group of atoms chilled almost to absolute zero. When a group of atoms is in this state, they begin to act as though they are a single atom, which lends itself to superconductive properties. For this discovery, Wieman and Cornell were awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics.

8. TiVo

You’re living in the age of Netflix, Hulu and HBO Max, so it might be hard to remember what having cable is even like. But before the streaming giants took over, TiVo was a leader in on-demand television. In 1997, CU alum Jim Barton (ElEngr, CompSci’80; MCompSci’82) and business partner Mike Ramsey founded what would become TiVo, which was best known for the device that allowed viewers to record and save television programs onto a hard drive for later viewing, and to pause and rewind live TV.

9. Quantum Squeezing

In their efforts to better understand dark matter — the substance that likely makes up most of the universe’s mass — a group of scientists, including many at CU’s JILA research institute, developed quantum squeezing. In February 2021, led in part by CU alum Daniel Palken (MPhys’18; PhD’20) and NIST fellow Konrad Lehnert, the scientists found that their new approach to searching for axions allows them to better separate the signals of axions from the less relevant signals of quantum fluctuations. All this is to say that this method puts the scientific community one step closer to understanding the mysterious dark matter.

10. Body Battery

In 2021, Jianliang Xiao, a mechanical engineering associate professor at ��񱦵�, created a small, wearable device that uses thermoelectric generators to convert body heat into power. The device is made from polyimine, a material that is stretchy and can heal itself. The hope is that this fully recyclable gadget can someday help power fitness watches and other wearable devices.

A month into 2020, most people are still staying home. After they tear through everything on Netflix and Hulu, many are turning to the pages of books to occupy their minds. Grab a cup of tea and a fluffy blanket, then get cozy in your favorite reading nook to escape into one of these 10 little-known books recommended by CU English faculty.

1. A Time of Gifts by Patrick Leigh Fermor

Recommended by Professor John Stevenson.

A Time of Gifts follows the true story of an Englishman who walked across Europe in the early 1930's — from London to Constantinople. In this first book, Fermor documents his travels from London to Hungary, after which the sequel, Between the Woods and the Water, recounts the remainder of his adventure. Stevenson wrote that, “beautifully written, full of observations and ideas and adventures, it’s a book for the ages.”

2. Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story by Alfred Hassler and Benton Resnik

Recommended by Professor William Kuskin.

Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story, which came back into print nearly 60 years after its initial publication, is a 16-page graphic novel detailing the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott in which Dr. King, Rosa Parks and 50,000 others fought against the segregation of city buses. The comic book is credited for inspiring MARCH, the graphic novel autobiography trilogy by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell.

3. The Big Clock by Kenneth Fearing

Recommended by Associate Professor Cheryl Higashida.

Originally published in 1946, The Big Clock is an American noir novel that takes place in the publishing industry of New York City. The main character, George Stroud, gets tangled up in a murder mystery and must prove his own innocence. Higashida writes that it is a “super fun and thought-provoking novel” that “raises questions about time and identity in industrial capitalism.”

4. La portentosa vida de La Muerte (The Astounding Life of Death) by Fray Joaquín Bolaños

Written in Spanish and originally published in 1792, La portentosa vida de La Muerte was one of the first Mexican novels, written by a Franciscan priest. The book takes the reader through the journey of Death, Adam and Eve’s daughter, who falls in love with several people but whose husbands keep dying off before their wedding night.

5. Ice by Anna Kavan

Recommended by instructor Jason Gladstone.

Ice takes place in a frozen, apocalyptic landscape where walls of ice tower and governments vie for control. The narrator must take a glacial journey to find and save a glass girl with silver hair before the ice closes in on the world. This science fiction novel is called a warning against climate change and totalitarianism, a feminist exploration of violence and trauma, and an allegory for the author’s struggles with addiction.

6. Ancient Lights by Davis Grubb

Recommended by Professor Ruth Ellen Kocher.

In Ancient Lights, a modern epic novel, country bumpkin Sweeley Lynch of West Virginia is the only man who can save the world from the founders of an electronic conspiracy. Kocher called the book “bizarre in a very druggy, hallucinatory, Hunter S. Thompson kind of way.”

7. Maud Martha by Gwendolyn Brooks

Recommended by Assistant Professor Khadijah Queen.

Although Brooks is well-known for her poetry, this coming-of-age story, originally published in 1953, was her only work of fiction for adults. The novella is compiled of a series of 34 vignettes, set in the 1940s, that come together to create what Brooks called a “kind of portrait of a young Chicago woman’s life.”

8. The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhol

Recommended by PhD candidate Grace Rexroth.

The true-crime book The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper tells the stories of the women killed in 1888 by the unknown man who became the media sensation known as Jack the Ripper. Rexroth writes, “We seem to have this fascination with perpetrators of violence that often has gendered connotations (usually some version of: male killer becomes infamous while his female victims are elided). This book tackles that very problem. It … does the feminist work of making Jack the Ripper's victims visible and legible to a modern audience.”

9. The Story of Harold by Terry Andrews/George Selden

Recommended by Professor Elisabeth Ann Sheffield.

The Story of Harold follows a man named Terry’s journey through a life of tortured and unfulfilled relationships, first with a woman whom he cannot fully love, then with an unreciprocating father of six, and another with a young boy who is already doomed to a life of insecurity and failure. Terry strives to redeem the boy — even as he prepares his own suicide.

10. Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household

Recommended by Professor John Stevenson.

Set in the 1930s, Rogue Male is the story of a hunter passing through an unnamed central European country controlled by a vicious dictator. In his self-appointed mission to kill the ruler, security catches up with him just before he pulls the trigger. Stevenson called it the “unputdownable story of a man on the run … Clever escapes from certain capture follow one after another, right up to the potent conclusion. The best thriller I have ever read.”

Whether they're dancing until they can’t stand or simply watching the guitarist shred a solo, the people of Boulder love their concerts. CU has hosted many amazing artists over the years, representing everything from classical cello to electronic dance music. Here are 10 great concerts performed at ��񱦵�.

1. The Eagles

Glenn Frey, singer and guitar player for The Eagles, was known for wearing University of Colorado T-shirts at concerts. Some think the five-night stint of shows the group played at Tulagi on the hill in their early career gave the school a special place in Frey’s heart. Once they garnered major fame, The Eagles played Folsom Field on July 29, 1978 during their Hotel California Tour. The band opened with “Hotel California” and ended with a four-song encore of “Rocky Mountain Way,” “James Dean,” “Take It Easy,” and “Tequila Sunrise.”

2. The Grateful Dead / Dead & Company

With their 1972 show, The Grateful Dead was one of the first bands to perform at Folsom Field, and Dead Heads came from far and wide to see the action. In July 2016, The Grateful Dead came back as the first band to play Folsom Field after a 15-year concert drought. Bob Weir, an original member of The Grateful Dead and a star of Dead & Company, said of CU before their return, “I’m looking forward to going back there in the biggest way.”

3. Dave Matthews

In March 1999, the legendary Dave Matthews played with Tim Reynolds at Macky Auditorium. Later, in 2001, the Dave Matthews Band played Folsom Field on their promotional tour for the album Everyday. The group played 15 minutes over their allotted time and incurred a $15,000 fine from the university — $1,000 per minute. They played so long and so loudly that concerts were suspended from Folsom Field indefinitely. It wasn’t until Dead & Company played in 2016 that Folsom Field saw another show.

4. Yo-Yo Ma

Yo-Yo Ma, widely considered the world’s greatest living cellist, graced CU with his presence at Macky Auditorium in 2017. Ma is credited for invigorating classical music through his collaborations across all genres and cultures.

5. Van Halen

Van Halen played Folsom Field in July of 1986 as a part of their 5150 tour. They opened with a cover of “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks and closed with “Ain’t Talkin ‘bout Love” before a two-song encore.

6. The Rolling Stones

Mick Jagger and the rest of the band played three times at Folsom Field. In July 1978, the group opened with a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Let It Rock.” They came back in October 1981 to play two more shows in promotion of their “Tattoo You” album.

7. Cheap Trick

In July 1980, Cheap Trick played Folsom Field with three other bands as a part of the Colorado Sun Day series. The series featured concerts at both Folsom Field and Mile High Stadium throughout the '70s and '80s.

8. Zeds Dead

Representing the realm of newer music, Zeds Dead, a Toronto-based producer/DJ duo, performed at CU’s 2019 WelcomeFest. Although they play a variety of genres, Zeds Dead is best known for being a leader in electronic dance music.

9. Fleetwood Mac

In 1977, Fleetwood Mac played the Folsom Music Festival as a stop on their Rumors tour. They opened with “Don’t Stop” and closed with the iconic “Go Your Own Way.” The event drew a record crowd of 61,500 people.

10. Paul McCartney

The Beatles singer performed at Folsom Field in May 1993. His set included many of his most famous songs, like “My Love” and “Hey Jude.”

Boulder is beloved for its outdoorsy atmosphere and commitment to letting nature thrive, that helps create a city that is home to all types of plants and animals. With CU’s campus located in the heart of the city, many of Boulder’s urban wildlife can be spotted on the walk to class. From the occasional curious bear to the pollinator-friendly lavender, here are 10 plants and animals you can find around campus.

1. Bears

Although they don’t come often, these furry mischief-makers have been known to wander down from the foothills to visit campus every once in a while. In 2019, campus saw several visits from bears, most notably on fall move-in day. Read this article to learn how to stay safe if you see a bear on campus.

2. Raccoons

Raccoons can be found in rural and urban areas across the country, but Boulder's raccoons have become so familiar that they almost feel like honorary on-campus residents. Raccoons are known for being smart and playful, but its best to keep your distance if you see one, since they can be aggressive if provoked.

3. Squirrels

Every college campus thinks their squirrels are exceptionally bold and fearless. Could CU’s campus squirrels really be unique? Either way, these fluffy-tailed buddies can be seen anywhere on campus, often in search of whatever food they can get their tiny paws on.

4. Lavender

Although it originated in the Mediterranean region of Europe, this soothing aromatic can be found in the campus pollinator garden. The garden is split between two locations on campus that together cover a total of 10,000 square feet. Other plants you can spot in the pollinator garden include barberry, currant, gooseberry and yarrow.

5. Turtles

Turtles are very common throughout the world, and they often enjoy one of the longest animal life spans that we know of. CU's campus turtles can be seen swimming or basking on a log at Varsity Lake.

6. Hackberry Tree

The hackberry tree is a Colorado native, just like over half of our students here at CU. Hackberry trees can be identified by their serrated leaves and small, dark purple fruit.

7. Prairie Dogs

The prairie dog population in Boulder is plentiful, and when they’re not burrowing underground, they can often be seen around campus. Prairie dogs are considered a “keystone species” in Colorado because of their important role in our natural ecosystems.

8. Little Leaf Linden Tree

The variety of little leaf linden trees that can be found on campus has heart-shaped leaves and hails from Europe.

9. Redbud Trees

Redbud trees are often used as decorative trees, as they are known for their gorgeous lavender or pink blossoms. Stroll around campus in the early spring to see these beauties in full bloom.

10. Deer

The type of deer most commonly spotted around Boulder is the mule deer, which are known for their big ears said to resemble those of a mule. Seeing these cuties on campus can be difficult if they’re skittish, as their excellent hearing and eyesight keep them constantly aware of potential danger.
