On September 6, 2019, Claude Marks visited campus and gave a guest lecture:

Please join filmmaker, journalist, archivist, and former political prisoner Claude Marks for a discussion of his most recent documentary Symbols of Resistance about the Chicana/o Movement as it emerged in Colorado and New Mexico. Through reflecting on the making of Symbols, Mr. Marks will explore the questions, What does responsible documentary work look like? How do we uplift subjugated history? And why?

As a reporter and production director at KPFA-Berkeley in the 1960s and 1970s, Mr. Marks produced award-winning radio programs such as the weekly news programs “The Real Dragon” and “Nothing Is More Precious Than.” Mr. Marks currently runs the Freedom Archives, a San Francisco-based non-profit educational archive of audio, video, and print materials pertaining to social movements of the 1960s through the 1990s such as the Chicana/o Movement, the American Indian Movement, Black Power, and women’s, lesbian, and gay movements.

Jackie Wang
Jackie Wang is s a student of the dream state, black studies scholar, prison abolitionist, poet, filmmaker, performer, trauma monster, and PhD candidate at Harvard University in African and African American Studies. She is the author of Carceral Capitalism (Semiotexte / MIT Press), a number of punk zines including On Being Hard Femme, and a collection of dream poems titled Tiny Spelunker of the Oneiro-Womb (Capricious). In her most recent work she has been researching the bail bonds industry and the history of risk assessment in the criminal legal system. She is currently a fellow at the Film Study Center, the Warren Center and the Weatherhead Center.

Andrea Brady
Andrea Brady's books of poetry include The Strong Room (Crater, 2016), Dompteuse (Book Thug, 2014), Cut from the Rushes (Reality Street, 2013), Mutability: Scripts for Infancy (Seagull, 2012), and Wildfire: A Verse Essay on Obscurity and Illumination (Krupskaya, 2010). She isProfessor of Poetry at Queen Mary University of London, where she runs the Centre for Poetry and the Archive of the Now. She is also co-publisher of Barque Press. In 2018-19 she is a fellow at the National Humanities Center in North Carolina, where she is finishing a book on Poetry and Bondage.

On April 25, 2019, the Creative Writing Association is hosted the final portion of the Poetry Month Performer Series: a reading by Danez Smith! The event was held in Club 156 (in the UMC).

Danez Smith is a back, queer, poz writer and performer from St. Paul, Minnesota. Danez is the author of Don’t Call Us Dead (Graywolf Press, 2017), winner of the Forward Prize for Best Collection, the Midwest Booksellers Choice Award and a finalist for the National Book Award, and [insert] boy (YesYes Books, 2014), winner of the Kate Tufts Discovery Award and the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry. Danez is a member of the Dark Noise Collective and is the co-host of VS with Franny Choi, a podcast sponsored by the Poetry Foundation and Postloudness. Danez’s third collection Homie will be published by Graywolf in spring 2020.
