Step 8: Fostering Conditions to Help New Hires Succeed

The purpose of this step is to ensure the long-term satisfaction andÌýsuccess ofÌýnew faculty members.

The Environmental Studies Program at the ²ÊÃñ±¦µä understands that efforts to makeÌýitsÌýfaculty-hiring process more inclusive and equitableÌýwill not, in and of themselves, result in a more inclusive and equitable unit.

As discussedÌýthroughout this guide, unit culture isÌýintegral to the inclusive and equitable hiring process. ENVS isÌýtherefore adopting a two-pronged approach to both serve the immediate needs of new faculty members andÌýpromote a broader culture of inclusivityÌýand equitability within the unit:

Ìý 1. ÌýENVSÌýhas outlined protocols to foster conditions for new hires to succeed.

Ìý 2. ÌýENVSÌýhas outlinedÌýspecific objectives and action measures to enhance inclusive excellence in the program more broadly.

Ìý

Protocols to FosterÌýConditions for New Hires to Succeed:

  • Provide mentoring opportunities for all teaching faculty, including instructorsÌý
  • Ensure mentoring opportunities that address specific needs of underrepresented faculty
  • Compile and make accessibleÌýa list of campus resources specific to supportingÌýunderrepresented faculty
  • Provide opportunities for shadowing in classroom environments
  • Structure theÌýservice load of new hires with consideration toÌýnot overburdening underrepresented faculty
