Homesick: Tips to feel better
As the semester gets under way, it’s common to have feelings of homesickness. You may be adjusting to a new environment at ²ÊÃñ±¦µä, and these feelings are normal. Even though it might not be obvious, many students are experiencing the same thing.
Handling homesickness
While feeling homesick is not fun, it will get better over time as you get used to new surroundings, adjust to the expectations of a new semester and establish new friendships. Finding places on campus to call your own can help. Explore options for your new favorite lunch spot or study nook – places that are comfortable and feel like home to you.
Keep in touch with your family and friends from home. If you’re local, try to avoid visiting home during these first few weeks of the semester. Allow yourself time to get comfortable on campus and get to know new friends.
What can you do to help someone who may be struggling?
Almost everyone will experience varying degrees of homesickness throughout the year. People sometimes need support, even if it looks like they are adjusting well. Here are some things you can do to help overcome feelings of homesickness:
Reach out
Whether it’s a new friend or someone you've known for a while, inviting them to hang out or grab coffee can help them feel more connected.
Help them go at their own pace
Remind them that it’s normal to feel apprehensive about getting involved or trying something new. Also, encourage them to stretch the boundaries of their comfort zone.
Be inclusive
If it looks like someone is uncomfortable in a group, helping to break the ice or introducing them to others can make them feel like they belong. Every student goes through a transitional period.
If at any point it feels like too much or you're concerned about a friend, offers workshops, Let's Talk consultations and other resources to support students.
