While general office work, such as answering phones and printing materials, is a part of the day-to-day duties for an intern, AFPC offers a uniquely hands-on and substantive internship experience that is hard to find at similar institutions. Interns get a chance to work closely with foreign policy professionals thanks to the relatively small size of our organization and the selectivity of the intern program. Because we deal with a wide variety of topics, interns are also afforded a high degree of flexibility in choosing what projects they work on and the subjects that those encompass. Projects usually entail large amounts of research work, writing, and some presentation crafting. Interns also help to prepare for staff events ranging from round table discussions to visits from foreign delegations. AFPC encourages and provides opportunities for interns to author or co-author opinion editorials (). Finally, since we at AFPC take great interest in seeing that our interns are poised for future success, professionals from a wide range of backgrounds are periodically brought in to talk to interns about the different career paths in foreign policy and the ways to best pursue them.
Because we put so much effort into making our internship program one that benefits the interns as much as the organization, preference is given to applicants who will remain connected with AFPC after their time here has ended. Therefore, U.S. citizens or individuals with a demonstrated future interest in continuing to work on foreign policy matters in D.C. have a much higher chance of being accepted to the program. AFPC also does its recruiting internally and looks to current or former interns to fill job openings. However, anyone applying to the internship program with the intention of it leading directly to a position at AFPC should know that we keep a small permanent staff and that job openings are therefore few and far between. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Thank you again for your interest in our organization and internship program!
