Launched in September 2014, the ²ÊÃñ±¦µä Grand Challenge is a response to President Obama’s nationwide call to action for companies, research universities, foundations, and philanthropists to seek solutions to the pressing problems facing our world today. The coalescence of the ²ÊÃñ±¦µä’s strengths in earth, space, and social sciences was the foundation for Our Space. Our Future., which strives to implement new observation and exploration technologies to discern the pace and pattern of changes to our planet.

IRISS, a pillar of the ²ÊÃñ±¦µä Grand Challenge, is a multi-disciplinary team that leads the design, development, and deployment of novel remote and in-situ sensing systems to exploit mobility enabled by aerospace systems to enhance data collection from the ground, in the atmosphere, and from space. With its partners,ÌýIRISSÌýexplores commercial opportunities and fosters discussions on the ethical, legal, and social policy implications of new technologies and big-data collection.

We live in a four-dimensional universe of space and time, continuously seeking higher ground for the otherwise unobtainable clarity that comes with seeing from above. Mobility enabled by flight extends our spatial reach and provides temporal presence—being at the right place at the right time—for critical applications that may include emergency response, a photographic record of receding glaciers or expanding deserts, or delivering a package to your door.ÌýIRISSÌýtransforms data-collection technologies and strategies by facilitating 4D sight through a ground-to-space sensing column with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operating in the atmosphere integrated with ground-based and spaced-based observation systems. We can utilize the capabilities of our sensing system for myriad purposes, ranging from improved climate and weather forecasting to better-informed government policy making to real-time decisions for products and services deliveries, and to address the multitude of emerging research and education challenges to prepare the workforce of the twenty-first century.
