Make Local Connections

It may be easy to connect with other international students, especially those who are also from your home country, but take advantage of the fact that you have access to local connections here in the US and in Boulder! However, it is important to note that how people make friends and connect here in the U.S. may be different than in your home country. Consider joining clubs or student organizations to connect with local college students and community members.

Reflect and Document your Experience 

Taking photos, creating a blog, utilizing your social media, and keeping a journal are a few ideas to document your experiences abroad. You may collect fun stickers and trinkets along the way that can be kept in a box for sentimental and reflective purposes! Reflecting in various ways can create a greater understanding of international experiences and how they impact your view of the world. Travel, Explore, and Try New Things! 

You may only in the United States for several months to a few years, what things can you take advantage of here?! In Boulder, we are right next to the Flatirons and for some beautiful outdoor experiences. Check out a concert at , try some local restaurants, visit museums, and hang out at local coffee shops. Outside of Boulder, see what the beautiful state of Colorado has to offer! Try your hat at skiing, paddle boarding, hiking… the options are limitless!

Culture Shock Considerations

Adjusting to a new culture can be an emotional roller coaster. You may think the way things are done here in the U.S. are silly, or different, or weird. Or you may think a new way of doing something is fun and convenient! Take time to consider how you approached life at home, and how that may be different here. Reflect on your values, assumptions and beliefs - how are they challenged here in the U.S.? Always know that you can reach out to ISSS or CAPS for support.

Global Competency and Professional Development

Make connections with classmates, professors, and community members in your field of study. This planet is ever evolving with a global connective lens. By gaining experience in your field in a foreign country, you are setting yourself apart from other candidates. How can your time abroad in the U.S. impact your career path?
