College of Music student singing national anthem at GOP debate

Performance Certificate student Meagan Mahlberg will sing the national anthem before Wednesday's Republican presidential debate on the CU-Boulder campus.

When Coors Events Center hosts the Republican presidential candidates for a debate on Wednesday, Oct. 28, the College of Music community will be well represented. Performance Certificate student Meagan Mahlberg will be singing the 鈥淪tar-Spangled Banner鈥 before the debate begins.

鈥淚t鈥檚 such an honor to sing for such prestigious event and such prestigious people,鈥 says Mahlberg, currently pursuing her third degree from CU-Boulder. She says she was tapped for the gig by the voice faculty. 鈥淭here was no audition 鈥 CNBC asked Sarah Adderholdt to pick a singer, and she asked the voice faculty to choose.鈥

The soprano, originally from Penrose, Colorado, says regardless of the politics of the evening, she鈥檚 going to soak in the experience. 鈥淭he process of selecting a leader for our country is one to be respected and celebrated, so it鈥檚 an honor to be able to share my voice for such an event.

鈥淚鈥檓 also excited to see the debate live."

Mahlberg, known by Boulder audiences for her roles in the 鈥淧irates of Penzance鈥 and 鈥淐os矛 fan tutte,鈥 says the performance is also a change in gears in terms of the material. 鈥淪o often I tell a fun and fictional story through music. By singing the national anthem, I am honoring the country that I dearly love and am proud to be a citizen of.鈥

It鈥檚 unclear whether the national anthem will be part of the national broadcast of the debate; Mahlberg says even if she isn鈥檛 on TV, she鈥檚 still happy to be performing for the candidates. 鈥淪ecretly, I kind of hope that one of them is impressed enough by my voice that maybe someday I could be hired to sing at another political event!鈥
