Flor Jasmin Torres, who is a double major in Philosophy and in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology here at CU-Boulder, has been awarded a University of Colorado President鈥檚 Diversity Award Commendation. She was awarded the Commendation for her leadership as a founding member of a neuroscience education outreach group, where she helped transform the program into one that reaches out to underserved communities to encourage community empowerment.听

Jasmin also obtained funding from the Office of Outreach and Engagement to travel to Trinidad, Colorado to work with a group of 9th-12th grade young women participating in an Upward Bound science and mathematics summer enrichment program.

Jasmin has also been a leader in the Ethnic Living and Learning Community (ELLC) which is a part of the Leadership Residential Academic program at CU. She started out as a student in the program, was a peer mentor the following two years and later a Resident Advisor (RA) for 1st year students in the program. As an RA she was given an award for her commitment to diversity and social justice education in the residence halls due to her efforts in increasing more effective dialogue and programming about social justice topics within the residence halls.听

Jasmin has also worked as a care coordinator at a volunteer run clinic that serves the underserved in Colorado.

She belongs to the United Mexican-American Students (UMAS) and Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Azlan (MEChA) chapters at Boulder, to help to empower and inspire students from underserved communities to consider going to college and becoming CU-Boulder college students.听

Jasmin will be graduating this May. She plans to take some time off, and then go to medical school. She is interested in practicing medicine and reducing health disparities in the US.听
