We study theory to transform ourselves and society and learn with middle and high school youth in Boulder Valley School District who are leading change in their own schools and community.&nbsp; Together we work to understand and address complex issues relevant to&nbsp;youth such as&nbsp;racism in schools, support for immigrant youth and families, addressing global warming, and access to higher education.&nbsp;</p><p>EDUC 2919 students meet on twice a week on campus (currently virtuall) during Monday and Wednesday for 75&nbsp;minute seminars and on Fridays students meet off&nbsp;campus at a local middle&nbsp;or high school for 90&nbsp;minutes for a the Public Achievement practicum (occuring virtually due to COVID-19).&nbsp; <strong>Our course is also open for high school students,&nbsp;community college students and community memebers to take through our extraordinary enrollment partnership.&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong>During the weekly seminars, students&nbsp;consider the relationship&nbsp;between democracy, education, and social change.&nbsp;</p><p>Our course objectives are:</p><ol><li>Theories: Develop understanding of and apply theories of demoracy, education, diversity and social change</li><li>Democracy in Action: Observe and practice democracy and leadership through Public Achievement each week;</li><li>Public Skills:&nbsp; Develop and demonstrate public skills including community based research,&nbsp;deliberation on complex social issues, public narrative, and project&nbsp;facilitation.</li><li>Power and Identity: Understand&nbsp;concepts of identity, power, privilege, oppression,&nbsp;intersectionality and diversity with attiention to&nbsp;education, institutions, and public work.</li><li>Moblize k-12 Students: Support students and PA Teams as they identify a&nbsp;role and skills and citizens who&nbsp;address complex social issues in their schools and community</li></ol><p><strong>Interested in joining Public Achievement?&nbsp; INVS4919 is comprised of students&nbsp;who are&nbsp;accepted into a cohort of Teaching Assistants and&nbsp;continue to lead in the Public Achievment program and course.&nbsp; Students&nbsp;further explore the role that education and youth&nbsp;play in addressing social justice issues.&nbsp; INVS4919&nbsp;students investigate progressive pedagogical and community organizing strategies to encourage higher levels of critical&nbsp;analysis and creativity among their CU peers and k-12 students. &nbsp;The "Teaching Social Justice" course is part&nbsp;of&nbsp;CU's Public Achievement program trajectory;&nbsp;INVS4919&nbsp;students serve as mentors to EDUC&nbsp;2919 students,&nbsp;advance&nbsp;the mission of Public Achievement, and&nbsp;ensure the quality of culturally relevant civic engagement on campus and in our partner schools.&nbsp;
