A group of 11 high school students in STEMÌý(science, technology, engineering and math)Ìýspent their summer observing birds interactingÌýwith the environment through the guided artsÌýand sciences approach of the Side by SideÌýproject.

The outreach project was created by BethÌýOsnes, associate professor in theatre, andÌýRebecca Safran, associate professor in ecologyÌýand evolutionary biology, for underservedÌýfemale-identifying or nonbinary students.ÌýOsnes and Safran hope that educating andÌýempowering these students in STEM fields andÌýin the arts will diversify approaches, perspectivesÌýand solutions to environmental challenges.Ìý

The youth partnered with scientists, artists andÌý²ÊÃñ±¦µä graduate students who guidedÌýthem through observations of the naturalÌýworld. Journal notes and sketches from theirÌýtime spent in the field were developed into aÌýscript for a public performance.
