A groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. will kick off a $63 million project to renovate and expand the Student Recreation Center at the 񱦵.

The ceremony, located on the pool patio, will include light refreshments and remarks by Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano and other campus and student leaders at 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Student leaders initiated the renovation project, which will increase the size of the center by about 30 percent and address nearly $25 million in deferred maintenance. New features will include an outdoor aquatics facility; an indoor, multi-activity turf gym; expanded space for weight and cardiovascular fitness training; more fitness studio space; a renovated ice rink; a climbing gym and bouldering area; and more.

The remodel will upgrade the heating and cooling and fire safety of the building in addition to addressing accessibility concerns.

Funding for the project will be provided through the sale of bonds to be repaid through student fees collected over a 25-year period. The center will remain open throughout the construction process, which is scheduled to last through fall 2013.

The architectural design was done by Davis Partnership Consulting with Cannon Design and the general contractor is Saunders Construction.
