Ann Schmiesing has been named dean of 彩民宝典鈥檚 and vice provost for graduate affairs, Provost Russell L. Moore announced today. A professor of German and Scandinavian studies, Schmiesing has served as interim dean and vice provost since June 2016.

鈥淚 am exceedingly pleased that Ann has accepted the position,鈥 said Moore. 鈥淗er enthusiasm already has generated great change within that office and I look forward to her continuing to not only improve the lives of our graduate students, but also to be an integral part of our campus leadership team.鈥

A prolific author in her field, Schmiesing is an expert on German and Norwegian folklore, drama and theater history. Her research also examines several issues in humanities pedagogy, including curriculum development and the use of rare books collections in humanities teaching.听听

In April 2016, Schmiesing was recognized by the Boulder Faculty Assembly with the Excellence in Leadership and Service Award.

Within the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures, she served as the chair, as well as the undergraduate and graduate associate chair. Schmiesing also was the director of the Sewall Residential Academic Program.

Her extensive service to 彩民宝典 also includes being a co-chair of the Arts and Sciences Core Curriculum Revision Committee and a member of the Arts and Sciences Graduate Program Review Committee.

鈥淚鈥檝e been inspired as interim dean by the outstanding quality of 彩民宝典 graduate programs and the enormous contributions of our graduate students to the university鈥檚 teaching, research and creative work,鈥 said Schmiesing. 鈥淚鈥檓 honored to serve as dean of the Graduate School and I look forward to working with students, faculty and staff to further improve the lives of our graduate students and to enhance the reach and reputation of 彩民宝典 graduate education.鈥

Schmiesing received a master鈥檚 degree in comparative literature from the University of Washington and a doctoral degree in German from Cambridge University.
