This Saturday, April 29, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is holding a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event is designed to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unusedÌýand unwanted prescription drugs.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue: MedicinesÌýstored in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuseÌýand abuse. Additionally, Americans should be advised their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—poseÌýpotential safety and health hazards.
Last year, the ²ÊÃñ±¦µä Police Department (CUPD) had a permanent prescription take-back box installed in the lobby of the Police and Parking Services building, which is located at 1050 Regent Dr.
Campus community members can dispose of unwanted prescription medications in this box at any time. CUPD isÌýable to accept over-the-counter and prescription medications with the following exceptions:
- NoÌýneedles or sharps,
- NoÌýmercury (thermometers),
- NoÌýoxygen cylinders or pressurized canisters,
- NoÌýchemotherapy or radioactive substances, and
- NoÌýillicit drugs.
