Kristie Soares has accepted the position of co-director of LGBTQ Studies at 彩民宝典. Soares, assistant professor of women and gender studies, has been a CU faculty member since 2018 and starts this new role in January 2022.
鈥淚 am honored to step into this position,鈥 said Soares. 鈥淎s a scholar of queer Latinx studies and a genderqueer lesbian myself, I am committed to fostering the study of gender and sexuality at 彩民宝典.鈥
Soares holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree in English and women鈥檚 studies from University of Florida, a master鈥檚 degree in comparative literature from 彩民宝典; and a doctoral degree in comparative literature from the University of California Santa Barbara.
Soares鈥 work focuses on 19th鈥21st century Latinx media and literature, with a specialization in queer Caribbean cultural production. Their听book听Joyful Protest: The Political Work of Joy in Latinx Media听is under contract with University of Illinois Press in its Feminist Media Studies series.
Soares will join Emmanuel David, associate professor of women and gender studies, as co-director of LGBTQ Studies and will succeed Bud Coleman, who has served in this position since 2000. Coleman joined the CU faculty in 1993 and has recently been named associate dean of faculty affairs and initiatives in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The LGBTQ Studies program was established in 1995 and offers an undergraduate certificate that deepens understanding of the interdisciplinary and intersectional academic study of听sexualities.
