The City of Boulder Landmarks Board awarded CUÌýBoulder’s 1135 Broadway building with a project award on May 15 at the 31st annual Heritage Roundtable Awards Ceremony.Ìý
Each year, the Boulder County Heritage Roundtable hosts an awards ceremony to recognize owners of recently designated landmarks, local authors and award recipients, all of whom have made contributions to historic preservation in Boulder County.
In 1960, two large residences at 1135 and 1143 Broadway Street were razed to permit construction of the Commonwealth Industrial Bank of Boulder. The financial institution remained here until about 1971, and in 1973, ²ÊÃñ±¦µä used the building for its Earth Science Education Program. In the late 1970s, local modernist architect L. Gale Abels designed plans to expand the building to its current footprint and exterior design that you see today. The building later housed Art Hardware and Meininger Art Supply.
The university purchased the property in November 2018. 1135 Broadway is part of the 6.2-acre Boulder University Hill Commercial Historic District.
The building now houses the Renée Crown Wellness Institute, which was founded in 2019 and operated out of various locations on campus until its grand opening at its permanent location in October 2022. The institute focuses on interdisciplinary research-practice partnerships that promote the wellness of young people and the systems and adults who support them.Ìý
In addition to the institute’s mindfulness programming, the building touts elements of sustainability such as being fully electric.Ìý
On hand to receive the award were Campus Architect d’Andre Willis, Campus Landscape Architect Richelle Goedert, Renée Crown Wellness Institute Director Sona Dimidjian and Associate Director Julia Zigarelli.
