Astronomers Discover Youngest Massive Star Cluster In Milky Way

A University of Colorado at Boulder professor and several colleagues have identified what is believed to be the youngest massive star cluster yet detected in the Milky Way Galaxy. Known as W49, the cluster appears to contain about 100 type O stars – the hottest and most massive stars in our galaxy -- that are estimated be less than 1 million years old. The cluster also is thought to be peppered with thousands of lower mass, lower luminosity stars.

Elease Robbins Named Permanent Dean Of Students At CU-Boulder

Elease Robbins, interim associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been appointed to the position on a permanent basis, according to Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs. The appointment was approved by the Board of Regents on Aug. 3 and is effective Aug. 4. Robbins has held the position on an interim basis for the past year. The salary is $85,000.

CU-Boulder's August Commencement Parking Is Easier With Early Arrival

The 5,000 people expected to attend the University of Colorado at BoulderÂ’s commencement exercises Aug. 12 at 8:30 a.m. in the historic Norlin Quadrangle are strongly urged to plan for an early arrival. Free parking will be available in the Euclid Avenue Autopark, Lot 204 off 18th Street and Broadway, Lot 308 at Regent Drive and Kittredge Loop Road, and in Lot 310 off 18th Street and Wardenburg Drive. Lots 359 and 378, near Folsom Stadium, and the Regent Drive Autopark (Lot 436 on Regent Drive) also are open and free.

Regents Name Elizabeth Hoffman President Of The University Of Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - The University of Colorado Board of Regents announced today that Elizabeth "Betsy" Hoffman, 53, has been named the 20th president of the University of Colorado. Hoffman, currently Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), will take over CU's top post on Sept. 1.

CU's Journalism, Mass Communication School Names Sierra Nelson Outstanding Graduate

Colorado Photographer John Fielder To Give CU-Boulder Commencement Speech

Colorado nature photographer and local publisher John Fielder will give the commencement address at the University of Colorado at Boulder summer commencement ceremony Saturday, Aug. 12, at 8:30 a.m. in Norlin Quadrangle. CU-Boulder will confer 1,008 degrees, including 696 bachelorÂ’s degrees, 174 masterÂ’s and 138 doctoral degrees. The summer ceremony, which is much smaller than the spring and winter ceremonies, will last about two hours and include the reading of all the graduatesÂ’ names.

Best Night To View Perseid Meteor Shower Aug. 12

The Perseid meteor shower, one of the best celestial treats of the year, will be visible in night skies throughout Colorado in early August. The meteors will decorate the night sky Aug. 10 – 14, peaking on Aug. 12 when as many as 50 meteors per hour could be visible, according to experts at the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries will celebrate the life of Leo Walter Cabell Jr., retired associate director of the University Libraries and assistant professor emeritus on Monday, Aug. 7, at 3 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel on the Boulder campus. The service is open to the public and marks the one-year anniversary of his death. Memories, anecdotes and photos submitted no later than Thursday, Aug. 3, will be compiled for a memory book.
