U.S. Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonin Scalia will deliver the fourth annual John Paul Stevens Lecture hosted by the Byron R. White Center and the University of Colorado Law School on Wednesday, Oct. 1. The event will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Macky Auditorium on the CU-Boulder campus. Tweets sent during last year鈥檚 massive flooding on Colorado鈥檚 Front Range were able to detail the scope of damage to the area鈥檚 infrastructure, according to a study by the 彩民宝典. The findings can help geotechnical and structural engineers more effectively direct their reconnaissance efforts after future natural disasters鈥攊ncluding earthquakes, tsunamis and tornadoes鈥攁s well as provide them data that might otherwise be lost due to rapid cleanup efforts.

The public is invited to attend free, Saturday programs led by 彩民宝典 faculty on popular topics as part of the CU on the Weekend series, which begins Sept. 6. With topics ranging from the sweeping stories behind celebrated musical compositions to the micro-level study of bacteria that uniquely forms each person鈥檚 microbiome, CU on the Weekend programs are designed to satisfy the community鈥檚 curiosity surrounding some of the intriguing research conducted at CU-Boulder.

The University of Colorado cross country teams have consistently been one of the most dominate combined squads in the nation and this year the Buffs looks like they will remain that way with all of the talent returning to both men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 teams. The season officially kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 30, as the Buffs will host the CU Alumni/Open/Time Trial at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course on CU鈥檚 South Campus. The women鈥檚 5.8-kilometer race will start at 8:30 a.m. and the men鈥檚 8k race will follow at 9:15 a.m. Parking and admission are free.

The importance of Mars exploration and how the aerospace industry partners with university researchers to advance one of Colorado鈥檚 leading economic sectors will be featured at a free program Monday, Sept. 8, in south Denver.

An international research effort organized by the 彩民宝典 conducted the first multiple, unmanned aircraft interception of a telltale rush of cold air preceding a thunderstorm known as a 鈥済ust front鈥� as it rolled across the Pawnee National Grassland in northeast Colorado on Aug. 14.

Nearly 800 incoming students at the 彩民宝典 will spend their first Saturday as college students helping others in the community during the 鈥淏uff Day of Service鈥� on Aug. 23.

The 彩民宝典 and the city of Boulder have been honored with the International Town-Gown Association鈥檚 Larry Abernathy Award, recognizing the positive collaboration between the university and city. The university and city were recognized for the comprehensive move-in orientation program they offer for student renters living on the Hill and in Goss Grove, two of the most densely populated student rental areas in Boulder.

New students at the 彩民宝典 will be greeted with dozens of activities including a welcome convocation, a Folsom Field pep rally and a 鈥淕lobal Jam鈥� international food and music fest during Week of Welcome beginning Aug. 21. The free events give new students a chance to get acquainted with each other, the campus and surrounding community before classes start on Aug. 25. The activities are scheduled in addition to orientation sessions that cover the details of class registration, policies and student services at each college.

The 彩民宝典鈥檚 Baker Hall, closed the past 15 months for its first major renovation in more than 75 years, is welcoming 456 students next week with a modernized interior that better addresses the needs of today鈥檚 students while retaining the building鈥檚 original charm.
