Academic Petition

TheÌýPetition Request Form is used to request a waiver of a curriculum requirement or a course substitution. Students should discuss petitions with their faculty advisor before submitting. You need to have your letter of petition and any attachments ready for uploadÌýbeforeÌýyou click on the link and begin the petition process, so please read through these instructions before beginning.

Examples of petitions include:

  • Requesting that a specific transfer course or ASEN course be used to satisfy an AES degree requirement.
  • Requesting that an AES degree requirement be waived.

Begin by entering the contact information for your faculty advisor and focus area lead.ÌýContact information for the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and the Focus Area leads areÌýavailable on the forms page.

When you click ‘submit,’ you will be redirected to the DocuSign form. Complete the fields at the top of the form, and then attach your petition to the form by clicking the paperclip icon.

Your petition letter should contain:

  • The reason(s) for your petition.
  • What action you are requesting the Associate Chair take. If your request is related to a specific degree requirement, make sure it is stated clearly. For example, “I am requesting that my transferred course XY1234 count towards the RSESS Focus Area requirement for one course in physical sciences.â€
  • Detailed information about why the request should be approved. Supplementary materials such as course descriptions or syllabi may also be attached. Click the paperclip icon to attach more documents.Ìý

Note: This petition process is for departmental matters and requirements only. Petitions involving university rules and regulations are decided by the Dean of the Graduate School, and these petitions must be submitted by the department on your behalf; do not send petitions directly to the graduate school. Please contact your Graduate Program Advisor (GPA) if you have questions or wish to start this process.
