Energy & Climate Praxis

Our Energy & Climate Praxis

Our research is in concert with climate justice and science advocates, and works to exemplify values that have consequences for climate action and energy democracy. This work entails the ability to analyze communication phenomena through texts, isolated, individual deeds, and carbon emissions. It is also important for transforming our ways of living and ability to amplify underheard voices on the frontlines. Focusing on various community engagement efforts to heighten responses to climate disruption, our work emphasizes the related issues of culture, interaction, and voice to bring urgency to our climate crises and address engaged practices of responding to them.

Our Focus Areas

Environmental Communication & Community Engagement

In China, Oceania, nationally, and locally CDE Executive Committee members focus on environmental communication work that is grounded in community engagement. Sharing scholarship through talks, creative engagement activities, social media publicity, workshops, and research these outreach efforts focus on issues of crisis, care, just transition policy, and fostering better communication.

Student Opportunities through Curriculum

Supported by a seed grant on Science Communication & Environmental Communication undergraduate minors, CDE Executive Committee member Pezzullo is building connections with a CMCI One College Working Group: Environmental Communication to build curriculum opportunities for students and bridge experiences with other members of the campus community.

Climate Action & Just Transition

Climate change is the greatest challenge facing humanity today. The energy transition we must undergo may be our generation’s greatest opportunity. What actions and forums are necessary to rise to the challenge of vital—yet controversial—social issues, such as improving climate science communication and addressing what an energy transformation will mean for labor?

Current & Past Initiatives

Focusing on energy and climate, CDE contributes to broad themes of just transition, climate justice, and energy democracy research. Our work includes reports on a just transition and scientific expertise, attendance at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)/COP21 in Paris, France, collaboration with the City of Boulder to provide meaningful opportunities for public participation in environmental decision-making and social equity, and writing memos and reports about climate communication and policy.
