About Us
²ÊÃñ±¦µä's Biochemistry Krios Electron Microscopy Facility (BioKEM) was completed in JuneÌýof 2020;Ìýbecoming fully operational in Aug 2020. Thanks to Dr. Karolin Luger, Dr. Samuel Bowerman, Shanna Roemen, and Charles MoeÌýfor their hard work in getting the BioKEM facility running smoothly. Charles (Chuck) Moe built and ran this facility as BioKEM's first Facility Director, and we are greatly appreciative for his continued support in the facility.

Erik HartwickÌýjoined theÌý²ÊÃñ±¦µä's BioChemistry Department as the BioKEM Facility Director in June of 2023. Prior to accepting this position, Erik had completed his PhD in Dr. Jeffrey S. Kieft's laboratoryÌýinvestigating the interactions of viral RNAs with the eukaryotic translation machinery performing both x-ray crystallography and cryoEM. ErikÌýcontinued his independent research career by starting a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Ruben Gonzalez Jr. at Columbia University using both smFRET and cryoEM to investigate short-lived structural states of the eukaryotic translation initiationÌýmachinery.ÌýWith over 15Ìýyears of biochemical and structural investigation of RNAs, proteins, and protein-nucleic acidÌýcomplexes, across multiple universities and research disciplines, Erik brings valuable electron microscopy and laboratoryÌýexperience to the BioKEM facility.
