J1 Visa Reviews

Effective October 1, 2022, The Office of Export Controls (OEC) is now involved in reviewing and approving all DS-2019 applications and J1 visa extension forms.

OEC also has visibility into whenever a J1 submits an Out of Country/Temporary Absence Form, which details a J1's travel outside of the US while their J1 visa status is still active. OEC is notified automatically by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) of newly submitted DS-2019s, extensions, and Temporary Absences outside of the US. The listed sponsor for the J1 exchange program may be contacted by OEC if there are any questions related to the activities the J1 Visa holder will undertake while here at ²ÊÃñ±¦µä. The goal of this review exercise is to ensure the J1's activities, especially those in conjunction with research, are in compliance with export control regulations.
