Jake Carias 

5th-year Doctoral Student

Hometown: Buffalo, NY 

Research & Teaching: 

Jake’s research focuses on the intersection of urban sociology and the social determinants of health. Specifically, his Master’s thesis and dissertation research utilize traditional quantitative methods in demography and urban ethnography to analyze neighborhood and community development patterns, urban segregation, and the relationships between the built environment, health, and collective efficacy. As an instructor, Jake has independently taught courses such as Social Epidemiology and Social Issues & Ethics in US Health and Medicine. 

Service & Leadership: 

Jake serves as the chair of the Sociology Graduate Student Collective and as a Graduate School Senator for the and the United Government of Graduate Students. In these roles, Jake has advocated for student voice in university and department planning and decision making. Similarly, he has pressed for expanded resources for graduate students as researchers, teachers, and students across the university.
