Site maintainers are often provided source content for websites in the format of Word Documents. In Web Express, there is a great 'Pasting from Word' tool (the icon of a clipboard with a "W") that will make pasting in the content and retaining the format easy. When you paste from Word, such formatting as headings, lists and table are all preserved and any extraneous formatting code is stripped out. If the content is formatted using the principles of universal design (accessibility) then creating accessible content in Web Express is quick and easy using this tool.
Site maintainers will tell you though, this is ideal but far from common place. What is more often the case, is site maintainers need to create the proper formatting in Web Express for the content they are asked to post. It is not hard to format headings and lists but it can be tedious to reformat content from a layout table in Word which is not accessible. Copying and pasting, cell by cell the content is pure drugery.Â
Removing tables, without removing the content in the tables
An easy way to separate content from its table formatting is to use the Paste as Plain Text tool (the icon of a clipboard with a "T"). Use this tool whenever you need to change content in a layout table to a more accessible display format. There may be a small amount of reformatting required after that, but the majority of the work is done!
